Hey all, here's what we've been up to:


Exploring New Gameplay

We've been looking a bit at the structure of the game, asking ourselves what's missing, and prototyping some new ideas. Sometimes we like to ask questions like "What would it feel like to have a boost?" or "What if there were sections of the game that weren't "on rails"? Sometimes these questions don't go anywhere, and sometimes they lead in interesting and exiting new directions! Here's what a boost looks like so far:

We haven't quite figured out how this fits in the structure of the game, but it's a lot of fun, so we're going to keep it!


Also - I don't want to give too much away, but we've been working on a bigger structural change that will make the game feel a bit more open and add to the "explore the galaxy" aspect of the game. We're hoping to have more to share soon! Suffice to say: If you were expecting this game to be a simple Starfox clone, you're in for a surprise!

In addition to taking a closer look at the gameplay of Whisker Squadron, we're exploring some ideas for art styles and overall aesthetic feel. Stay tuned!


Backerkit Surveys Incoming Soon!

We're finally almost ready to send out some backer surveys. We'll be using a service called Backerkit, which will make things easier for us and you. It'll also be an opportunity to upgrade your pledge if you'd like, and will be an opportunity for your friends who missed the campaign to get in a late pledge.


Custom Character Portraits: Some Extra Time

We sent out some instructions a few weeks ago to let you get started on your custom character portraits. It looks like we won't need that final artwork from you until at least April 1st, so you've got a bit more time.


New Beta Builds?

For those of you in the Beta backer tier: we're hoping to have some new builds for you to try by mid-February. There'll be a lot of new stuff, and we'd like to get lots of feedback! Thanks for your patience.

November Update: Workin' on characters - character art templates!

Hey all, here's what we've been up to this past couple months!

For those of you who backed at $500 and above, please check for important info at the end of this post related to your custom in-game characters!


New Playable Character: Max

It's Max!

We added Max to the game as a playable character. Here's his Bio:

"He’s a happy-go-lucky Scottish Fold, and very protective of his pals. He’s also an expert on navigation and knows lots of facts about each of the worlds. Somehow his good nature makes him incredibly lucky."


Traits

In addition, each playable character now has their own "traits" that they'll bring to the team when they're selected. Here's Olivia's bio, describing her special traits:


New Animations And Expressions

Jin has been hard at work on character animation, giving each character a set of unique expressions. Here's what that looks like in the game:

What's Next:

- We're working on redesigning the options screen, and the new version should include keybinding options.

- We've been working hard on some core gameplay stuff. Short version: The game is going to feel a bit more procedural and dynamic than the current version. More to come soon!


Custom Character Art Templates

For those of you who backed the project at $500 and above, we're going to ask you to send in your custom character art soon. We're not quite ready to send out a poll yet, but we did want to get you more info so you (and possibly your artist!) can get started. Look for a separate Kickstarter update today with more info and template images!

Hey all, we've been working hard on tuning the core experience of Whisker Squadron this month. Here are some new features, which you can play now if you have access to the game on Steam (Everyone at the $50 and above tier):


  • World 1 saw significant updates - new enemies and hazards, and a more tuned experience overall
  • New shooting mechanic: You no longer stop shooting if you run out of energy. Instead, you'll shoot a weaker shot until you release the fire button and recharge
  • New weapons and items
  • The button bindings in the UI are a bit more intuitive now
